Former CIAA Player Sam Jones is a legend

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (C.I.A.A.) is known for producing talented basketball players. One player came on the scene more than 60 years ago.  His name is Sam Jones.

Jones played with North Carolina College.  Now it is called North Carolina Central University.

When Jones played college basketball there were no talent scouts, just word of mouth.  Jones recalls a conversation the basketball coach from Wake Forest University had with a recruiter.  That conversation got him discovered.

"Coach you have NC State, you have Wake Forest, you have Duke, you have UNC - who is the best player of those 4 schools? He says none - There is a kid at North Carolina College which I told you about by the name of Sam Jones. He's the best player in the state of North Carolina."

The rest is history. He went on to play for the Boston Celtics for 12 years. He won 10 NBA championships.

"I am the second most championship wins in the NBA," Jones said. "And the first - is my teammate Bill Russell. He has 11 NBA championships."

His time in the NBA was rewarding and at the same time challenging.

"The pressure had been put on me in basketball," Jones said. "To do the best I could - because in the black colleges if I did well that meant more coaches was going to come and look at the black schools that play in the division 2 basketballs."

Jones still loves coming to the CIAA tournaments. His message for young people is get an education and be a team player.  He has traded his basketball for another sport. He says he plays golf all the time.
