MOUNT HOLLY, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Mount Holly said an investigation to a possible assault led to a police chase that went through an open field at an elementary school on Wednesday.

According to the Mount Holly Police Department, officers were responding to a possible assault along the 400-block of Beatty Drive around 3:26 a.m. when the suspect drove past the officers and victim.

Officers tried to get the driver to stop, but a chase started.

During the chase, officers say the driver drove through a field at Catawba Heights Elementary School, hitting a fence before continuing to drive away.

Officers eventually stopped chasing the vehicle and found the abandoned car a short time later.

The vehicle, a 1988 Chevrolet S-10, was later determined to be stolen from Mount Holly.

Police say they know who the driver was and have issued warrants for their arrest relating to the chase.

The assault investigation is still on-going and charges are pending further review.

Police say the suspect, whose name has not been released, is also a person of interest in several other incidents currently under investigation.

Damage to the fence at the school was estimated at approximately $2,000. Damage to the vehicle was estimated to be approximately $1,000.
