Police believe smash-and-grab cigarette robbers strike again

Deputies in Rowan County are looking for two men they say smashed into two local stores recently. In one of the break-ins, the men only stole cigarettes.

The first incident happened around 11:30 p.m. on February 22, at the Village Grocery store on Highway 601 in Salisbury.

Police say one of the men was seen on surveillance video looking into the store moments before a window was broken and the alarm sounded.

Officials told WBTV that the second incident, which occurred around 2 a.m. that same night at the Dollar General on Mooresville Road, matches the first.

Investigators say two men, described as black males in dark-colored clothing, threw a rock and used a hammer to smash the glass door to the business.

Once inside, officers said, the duo stole a large quantity of Newport cigarettes and left the scene.

Officials say other similar crimes occurred in Salisbury City, Granite Quarry and China Grove the same weekend.

Anyone with information about the case or the men is being asked to contact Detective Billy Basinger at (704) 216-8682, or Lt. Chad Moose at (704) 216-8687.
