SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with driving under the influence and other charges after Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said the teen stole his father's car, got drunk and crashed into Lake Bowen.

Wright said the teen was driving upwards of 100 mph along Interstate 26 when he ran off the road, down an embankment and into the lake just after 1 a.m. Sunday.

Wright said the teen is lucky to be alive and says the teen has a good Samaritan to thank for saving him.

Wright said a witness to the crash ran down the embankment, waded into the water and pulled the teen from inside the car.

"It was pretty brave," Wright said. "It was dark, and they took a chance in that cold water to get that young boy out of there. It's an act of bravery."

Wright said he's working to identify the good Samaritan who pulled the teen from the car and present him with a citizen's award.

"It took some courage to go down that embankment, it's very overgrown and it's very high up. That would have been steep, very dangerous," said nearby resident Garlene Slone.

As for the teen, Wright said he only suffered a single minor scratch.

Wright said the teen was charged with DUI, destruction of personal property and possession of alcohol by a minor.
