CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A local youth baseball league is getting ready to open a new ballpark in Charlotte.

The West Meck Optimist Park is being transformed by the leaders of Carolinas Metro Reds Youth Baseball.

League leaders tell WBTV transforming the park will help them transform the lives of children.

"We are trying to give these kids a nice place to play," said Morris Madden. "But the real goal is to give them the skill set they need to go to college and live and nice life."

Lemuel Gipson is a product of Carolinas Metro Reds Youth Baseball.

He said the club helped him turn his life around.

"Basically it took me from a guy who was doing a lot of bad; bad grades, not paying attention in school and they turned me into a young man," Gipson said.

Gipson is now in college.

He spent his Saturday giving back and showing his appreciation to the coaches who helped save him -- with the game of baseball.

"The effort that they spent on me, or the other coaches spent on me, I want to return the favor because it saved my life, so I want to come out here and try to save another life," Gipson said.

The field will be ready for action this spring.
