During an event at Ninety Six High School on Thursday, a pig rodeo was held where some have alleged inappropriate handling of the sow.
According to Greenwood District 52 Superintendent Dr. Mark Peterson, high school and middle school students attended the pig rodeo event, which had the pig in a fenced-off area with teams trying to catch the animal.
News of the rodeo broke on social media where some claimed the pig was inappropriately handled during the rodeo, as it was "lifted shoulder height and spiked like a football" and "by the end of the ordeal, the pig could no longer walk" with claims the animal's legs were broken.
Peterson denied those claims saying, "The pig was not spiked, thrown down, nor did any bones get broken."
The pig in question was picked up by local animal activist Joe Mann on Friday and taken to Dr. Paula Watkins, DMV, at Chinquapin Animal Hospital where she was X-rayed and examined. FOX Carolina spoke with Watkins who said the pig had no broken bones or serious injuries. She said while the pig had some minor injuries, they did not know if they were older than Thursday.
The pig, named Charlotte by Mann, had bruising and soft tissue injuries, according to a Facebook post on his rescue page.
In the wake of the reaction to the event, Peterson said, "I can assure you that this activity will not be scheduled in the future. If I have offended anyone, I certainly apologize."
FOX Carolina is hearing from people on both sides, including students who were at the event, and will have continuing coverage on The Ten O'Clock News and on foxcarolina.com.
