Police: Argument, threat to student sparked temporary lockdown on college campus

Police in Kannapolis say a nearly hour-long lockdown at community college in Rowan County was the result of an argument between two students from several days ago.

According to Kannapolis police, two students at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College had an altercation with one another several days ago.

On Friday morning, one of the students, Jonathan E. Maddox, reportedly threatened the other student with a firearm on campus, according to Kannapolis police.

The incident happened in the parking lot of the South Campus which sparked a campus-wide lockdown around 9:35 a.m.

School officials sent out a campus alert message to students, faculty and staff via email, text and phone.

The South Campus location remained locked down for approximately one hour until Kannapolis Police Department secured the campus and completed their on-site campus investigation.

Officers say Maddox was arrested and is being charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a fire arm on campus.

The college administration issued an "all clear" for south campus at 10:20 a.m.

Students, faculty and staff have been told to resume their normal Friday activities. No other Rowan-Cabarrus campuses were affected.
