Thousands of children in our area depend on the Department of Social Services for their protection. Social workers have victories every day in keeping children safe and we are thankful for their work.
But sometimes they fail.
Many of the names you know: Zahra Baker, Jeremiah Swafford, Josiah and Gabriel Hawthorne. There are many more children whose cases never made the headlines.
WBTV's Sharon Smith uncovered dozens of local cases where children under the care of DSS died.
