YORK COUNTY, SC (WBTV) -

Deputies in York County say the mystery behind a man found unconscious on the side of the road has turned into a death investigation after he died from his injuries.

The York County Sheriff's Office says 49-year-old Eric Jay Joseph died from his injuries.

Joseph was found on January 31 lying near the corner of Soulsville and Stella Roads.

Officials say Joseph was unconscious, and had injuries to his face and head.

Investigators weren't initially sure if he's been injured in an attack or if he'd been hit by a vehicle.

Joseph was treated at Carolinas Medical Center - Main, where later died from his injuries.

York County Sheriff's investigators say they now believe Joseph was injured in a hit and run and the investigation has been handed to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

His family said the incident is a mystery, and they want someone to come forward.

"He was on his way to the house [where] he had been across town. He usually walked every evening," said Robert Joseph, Eric's older brother. He said his brother was just steps away from his destination.

"Probably was an accident. We need to know. We need some closure. Who hit him or whatever. That's all we want," he said.
