Lancaster recovering from Winter snow storm

Posted: Updated:

People in Lancaster County are still recovering from this winter storm with the help of strangers. Leslie Hess is from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He along with about a half dozen workers started clearing driveways and sidewalks of ice for people they didn't know.

"With all the bad things going on in the world," Hess said. "We believe the good thing to do is help uplift people and help people who are down."

Hess says his group is always looking for service projects.

"Just lending a hand," Hess said. "Where ever we can."

They worked on several homes Friday. One home belonged to a mother who needed the help.

"She is very appreciative," Neighbor Judy Garbett said. "She just had a newborn baby a couple of weeks ago and is very busy. She can get in and out. She has three other boys."

Other people depended on clearing the ice to earn a living.

"When I saw an opportunity," Contractor Bryan Moore said. "I went and passed out flyers to let people know that I will be available to clean their parking lots."

Moore says he charges between $150 and $300 per lot. He completed four before noon Friday. While Moore did it to help pay his bills, Hess and his crew charged nothing.

"That's what it's all about," Garbett said. "Loving your neighbor, isn't it."

Lancaster County will add up the cost of the storm starting next week. It doesn't budget for storms, it uses its reserves to pay the bills. Since South Carolina is under a State of Emergency, it will ask the Federal Government to reimburse them.

After digging out, the next step is repairing potholes. The Department of Public Works will tackle that very soon.
