CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

People trying to fly out of Charlotte Douglas International Friday afternoon have been met with long delays and cancellations.

Airport officials tell WBTV more than 100 outgoing flights were canceled Friday. Additionally, the Airport assisted approximately 1,000 customers who remained in the terminal overnight.

Dozens of passengers told WBTV they were trying to catch an American Airlines flight. An airline spokesman tells WBTV more than 500 American Airlines flights were canceled Friday.

The airlines released the following statement:

"As we continue to recover from the weather events of the past few days, flight loads are very high.  Customers whose travel plans have been impacted will not be able to rebook at the airport for flights today, as most flights are full.  US Airways, a subsidiary of American Airlines, is urging customers to please call US Airways reservations to rebook canceled flights."

The statement went on to say that weather conditions in the northeast are impacting other airports.

Customers are advised to continue checking with their airlines for updated flight status before leaving to come to the airport.
