(RNN) - NBC's Tom Brokaw has been diagnosed with cancer.

The network said Brokaw was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in August, but that doctors feel optimistic about his prognosis. The cancer affects blood cells in bone marrow.

"With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come," Brokaw said in a statement released by NBC.

"I remain the luckiest guy I know."

Brokaw currently serves as a special correspondent. He solo anchored the network's flagship newscast, Nightly News, from 1983 to 2004.

Brokaw has continued to work throughout his treatment and is contributing to the network's Olympic coverage.

According to the Mayo Clinic, men tend to develop the disease more than women, and most people diagnosed with multiple myeloma are over the age of 50.

Multiple myeloma is not considered curable. The American Cancer Society estimates about 24,050 new cases will be diagnosed in 2014.
