NC DHHS secretary says food stamp backlog cleared

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -

North Carolina's health agency says a backlog of food stamp applications has been effectively cleared before a federal deadline.

Health and Human Services Secretary Aldona Wos (vahsh) told legislators Tuesday that her office has told the U.S. Department of Agriculture that a backlog of more than 20,000 applications and renewals was eliminated by Monday's deadline.

Wos says there were 25 backlogged applications but officials were waiting for additional information on those.

The USDA had threatened to withhold $80 million from the state if the applications were not handled. The applications are supposed to be processed within 30 days.

Members of a General Assembly oversight asked what assurances they have that the backlog won't creep up again. Wos says a plan is being created, but county offices have a large responsibility.
