Arizona Senate panel endorses repeal of election law

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -

A proposed repeal of a sweeping 2013 Arizona election law that included trimming the state's permanent early voting list won approval from an Arizona Senate committee.

The measure was endorsed Monday in 6-3 vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

A similar proposal cleared a House committee last month.

The repeal of last year's law is designed to head off a voter referendum that was launched by the law's opponents and is set for November's ballot.

Referendum supporters believe the proposed repeal is a thinly veiled attempt to avoid the election and let the law's proponents re-enact its provisions piecemeal.

Last year's election law removed infrequent voters from a list of those allowed to vote by mail and makes it a crime for voter-outreach groups to turn in ballots.
