LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A few blocks from a vast, snowy landscape poised for development sits West Grocery and Liquor Store - where owner Gabriela Baryu worries about competition impossible to compete against in West Louisville.

"My business is going to be down because this is a small convenient store and I don't have everything like Walmart," Baryu said.

Baryu isn't sure her store at 10th Street and Broadway would be able to survive if a major retailer moves into the vacant lot where Phillip Morris shut down its site in 1999.

City leaders confirm they're in talks with a retailer to develop the property along West Broadway. Neighbors need a place to purchase groceries yet some neighborhood leaders are against the still unannounced project.

Some areas in West Louisville have been labeled a food desert - known as an urban area where its difficult to buy affordable, fresh food.

However, protestors recently rallied against the possibility of a Walmart coming to 18th Street and Broadway.

Groups like Kentucky Jobs with Justice continue working with neighborhood leaders to find a vision for this eyesore and better wages in West Louisville.

"That's an immediate benefit. You're putting more purchasing power in the pockets of people who would be working there. who can then make a little more of a healthier decision in a food desert," Executive Director Bonifacio Aleman said.

Walmart Director of Communications Anne Hatfield released the following statement, "While we are always looking for ways to serve our customers, we have no news to announce in West Louisville at this time.
