New program offers medical savings for Cleveland Co residents

Cleveland County Commissioners announced Wednesday that the County has partnered with Coast2Coast Rx.

It's a partnership that's expected to offers Cleveland County residents big savings at the Pharmacy. People will now be able to use a Coast2Coast Rx discount card on medications.

"This card saves 60%, on average, off the retail price of drugs. So it's primarily for the uninsured but it can help insurance too, if people have a particular drug that is not covered or if they have a high deductible," said Martin Dettelbach, Coast2Coast Rx.

Cleveland County is the second county in North Carolina to Partner with Coast2Coast Rx.

Here is how the partnership works:

Pharmacies pay Coast2Coast Rx for marketing services that drives customers into their stores.

Coast2Coast Rx invests that money into their discount card program and the savings are passed onto customers.

"Everybody is accepted into the program. There are no restrictions. So anybody, it's like a coupon, all they have to do is go in and bring it (the card) in to the pharmacy," Dettelbach said.

Customers are not the only ones benefiting.

For agreeing to use the program, Coast2Coast Rx will pay Cleveland County $1.25 for every prescription filled with a discount card.

County leaders have decided to use those funds to support the local Boys and Girls Club.

"80% of the kids that come to the Boys and Girls Club are coming from a single parent home. 75% of them are on free and reduced lunches. So when we help those kids. We are truly helping those kids that need help the most," said Jack Weller, Boys and Girls Club.

Discount cards are now available at government offices, county health facilities and participating pharmacies.

The cards can also be used on dental, vision, hearing and veterinary services.
