Walmart robbery, assault victims react to arrest

A Cherryville couple, robbed and attacked at a local Walmart tells WBTV they are still afraid, even though their alleged attacker is behind bars.

Dana Johnson, 45, was arrested in Lincoln County Wednesday, according to Cherryville Police.

The incident, which was captured on surveillance video, happened just before 9 p.m. on January 29, at the Walmart in Cherryville.

WBTV spoke with the victim. His name is Bill, and he didn't want to share his last name, because he's afraid of another attack. Bill is 67-year-old.

"He (Johnson) can't be out on the streets, doing this to anybody else," Bill said.

On the video, police say Johnson can be seen behind two victims in line. When the victims place their money onto the counter, police say Johnson grabs the money, shoves Bill to the ground and falls to the ground himself, then runs out of the store.

"We're older people and we've lived here all these years. Nothing like this has ever happened," Bill's wife Mary told WBTV.

Police say he got away with $300 of the victims' money.

Officials say Johnson was arrested during a traffic stop in Lincoln County the next day.

Johnson was transported from Lincoln County to the Gaston County Jail. His bond is set at $15,000.
