Homeowners believe construction project cause homes to crack

Posted: Updated:

Some Lee's Summit residents believe a blasting project has caused their homes to crack. Literally.

Officials in Jefferson City are investigating 11 complaints about whether the construction of a grocery store has followed state regulations governing blasting standards, and whether blasting exceeds maximum vibration standards.

The state won't look into whether the blasting caused the cracks in the foundations of homes.

The company responsible for the blasting said everything was done properly and the blasting did not cause the damage.

Lydia Wagner said she has seen significant cracks in her home and couldn't get the back door open.

"There is a big crack there from the window to the corner of the ceiling," she said. "And that was never there."

Workers are digging in the northwest corner of Todd George Road and Blue Parkway where a new grocery store is being built. She said she believes four loud blasts from the construction site is to blame, and she wants someone to pay for the damage.

"It was loud. You could hear it and the house just shook terribly," she said. "I can't afford to have it fixed and I'm afraid the house is going to fall in."

Lenexa-based Pexco applied for the blasting permit. The company owner, Russell Pilshaw, said he has been in the explosives business for 40 years and follows the state's strict guidelines.

He said the house closest to the site didn't have any damage or complaints about the process, and the monitoring was done there.

"The closest house was probably 800 feet closer than the person who is making this outrageous accusation," Pilshaw said.

Ten of the 11 complaints were filed Nov. 26, which is when one of the blasts occurred.

Wagner said cracks could be caused by the weather. She said she had some prior cracks, but nothing like the large cracks that she said occurred after the blasting was done.

"Nothing to the extent I have now. Nothing," she said.
