It took emergency workers two hours to pull a man from a well in Gaffney on Wednesday night after he fell while trying to rescue his cat.
Joey Dover was rescued from the 35-foot deep, 5-foot diameter well at a home on 10th Street just after 10 p.m. following his attempt to save his Buttons, his cat of 10 years.
"The cat was missing for seven days then my daughter could hear him hollering underneath the house and we knew there was a well under there," said Barbara Dover, Joey Dover's mother.
Barbara Dover said Buttons had been missing for several days and when her son heard her cries he felt he had to do something.
"He is a cat lover, we are all animal lovers," Barbara Dover said.
She said he crawled underneath her house, lowered himself down into the well using a rope, and reached Buttons. Barbara Dover said the other end of the rope was attached to her son's truck and the plan was to pull her son up by moving the truck forward.
"It all went bad," she said. "It didn't work."
Barbara Dover said her son fell down into the well with Buttons and the family had to call 911 for help.
She said besides some bumps, bruises and a sore back her son is OK and so is Buttons.
