For some local companies, snow days aren't an option

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Closed signs were posted Wednesday in windows all over town, making it obvious that many business owners were not willing to put their employees at risk with snow and ice still covering their parking lots and some roadways.

A boutique in South End even went so far as to proclaim itself "Too Cool for the Snow," adding that "The Cool Team" "Will Return Tomorrow."

But what happens when closing isn't an option?

"No, at Home Instead we don't have the luxury of doing that because our clients need us," says Roberta Farnum of Home Instead Senior Care Charlotte. Farnum and her husband own the company, which provides care to seniors at home, and even when the roads are bad, "we have to make sure that our caregivers are there to help them," she says.

But how to do that when the company's fleet of cars isn't performing?

"They're not doing too well in the snow," Farnum told us.

So she decided to rent a four wheel vehicle, and the company's community service director, Bryan Edwards, used it all day to pick up Home Instead employees, driving them all over the area so that they could reach their seniors.

Carol Gaither was thrilled to have Edwards pick her up. "My street was a sheet of ice when I called in this morning so I was glad to know I was going to get a ride," she says.

For the team to know that they can still do their job..."Oh, it's definitely worth it," Farnum says. "Our clients have to have somebody.  Some are bed ridden.  So, to us, it's a small price to pay."
