CINCINNATI -

The Kroger Co. and Harris Teeter Supermarkets, Inc. announced Wednesday morning that the merger between the two companies was completed on Jan. 28, 2014. The merger was first announced in July 2013.

Together, the new Kroger Co. will operate 2,641 supermarkets and employ more than 368,000 employees across 34 states and the District of Columbia.

Kroger was already the country's largest traditional supermarket operator and expands its reach in key southeastern and mid-Atlantic states by snapping up Harris Teeter.

Harris Teeter has 212 stores in eight states, many of them in North Carolina.

Harris Teeter will continue to operate its stores as a subsidiary of The Kroger Co. and the current president of Harris Teeter will remain with the company. There are no plans to close stores and associates will continue to have employment opportunities within the new company.

Harris Teeter shareholders sued to block the purchase of the grocery chain by The Kroger Co. back in July, 2013, less than two weeks after the merger was announced.
