WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Add another name to the list of probable political candidates in 2014. Skip Watkins announced Tuesday he will run for a seat on the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners. Current commissioner Tom Wolfe, who announced last week he would not seek election to a full-term, introduced Watkins at a news conference outside of the Board of Elections office.

"I have always known that I would serve in public office," Watkins said in an email news release that accompanied the news conference. "I was raised that service to your fellow man is of the highest order.  New Hanover County has given us a great life.  Valerie and I have raised our children here and look forward to seeing our family grow here.  It has been our home for the last thirty-five years. So now it is my turn to give back to the citizens of New Hanover County.  It is my intention to continue and defend the strong fiscal leadership our county has enjoyed for many years."

Watkins fell short in his bid to win a seat on Wilmington City Council in 2013, finishing 470 votes shy of securing one of the three open seats. Watkins is an Independent Financial Advisor with Capital Investment Group, who graduated from UNC Wilmington.

"One of my favorite goals that I think would save us a lot of money is to get the City of Wilmington and the leaders of the beach communities as well as those in the unincorporated areas of the County to try and work together and bring resources together, to be more efficient which will ultimately save tax dollars and hopefully deliver some savings."

Others who have expressed interest in running for County Commissioner in 2014 include Rob Zapple and John Dismukes. The filing period begins February 10th and runs through the 28th.
