NC presidential primary date may change again

A key North Carolina lawmaker says the legislature is likely to tinker with moving up the state's presidential primaries in 2016 now that Republicans have reinforced punishments for states that try to jump to the front of the line.

The Republican National Committee approved last week a new selection process that consolidates the primary season, but also sets tough penalties for states that hold primaries before March 1.

The General Assembly last summer agreed to move the state's presidential primaries from early May with a date in February in mind.

That decision angered South Carolina's Republican Party, which has the first-in-the-South primary.

Rep. David Lewis of Dunn says he would seek to change the law so that North Carolina Republicans and Democrats would avoid the potential loss of convention delegates.
