Community activist arrested in Gaston Co on traffic charge

GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A local community activist was arrested and charged with driving with a revoked license.

According to jail records, John Cladell Barnette was arrested on Friday evening.

Barnette is the founder of True Healing Under God (T.H.U.G.), a civil rights organization.

He was booked in the Gaston County Jail around 5:19 p.m. on Friday evening. He was being held on a $5,000 bond.

The Gaston County Jail website says he was released Friday night around 9:34 p.m.

Records show Barnette was hit with a similar charge in July 2013.  He was also arrested in Gaston County in June 2013 for not paying child support.

Barnette is actively pushing for community rallies in Charlotte in the case of a police officer accused of shooting and killing an unarmed man.

He's been active in several high profiled cases in the Charlotte-metro area.
