LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

A Swansea girl is being called a hero after she saved the life of her 72-year-old grandfather.

Miles from home at a family fishing hole, 10-year-old Cara Jumper swung into action a few weeks ago.

After her grandfather had a stroke and fell into the deep water, Cara wasted no time jumping in after him.

Coy Jumper says he has no doubt that Cara's actions are the reason he's alive today.

"It's just one of those things that's hard to believe, but it happened you know?" said Coy. "I'm just glad she was here, that's the main thing."

Pulling her grandfather to safety was just part of Cara's amazing work that day.

"And he lost his phone... It's probably at the bottom of the pond now," said Cara. "And so we didn't have a way to call or anything."

Cara navigated the back roads, driving the 3 miles back home, delivering Coy to his wife Esca.

"Got him to the kitchen table, sat him down. He could hardly swallow," Esca said.

Coy spent 6 days in the hospital, where doctors discovered a small aneurysm. He can't remember anything except hitting the water, but he knows how close he came.

"We're just thankful everything worked out like it did, and Cara's adrenaline kicked in and she knew what to do," Esca said.

With Coy recovering, the family can look back on the scary episode with some nervous laughter.

Thanks to a 10-year-old who's given her granddad a chance at a few more memories around the pond.
