Super 8 Motel shooting, first Columbus homicide of 2014

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Police are investigating a fatal shooting that left one man dead.

Columbus police told News Leader NIne the shooting occurred at the Super 8 Motel on Warm Springs Rd., around 12:30 this morning. The man was found blocks away in his vehicle,  near the Burger King restaurant on Gentian Blvd., across from Peachtree Mall.

Muscogee County Chief Deputy Coroner Freeman Worley confirms the victim is 39-year-old Troy Saunders of Fort Mitchell, Ala. His body will be sent to Atlanta for autopsy. Saunders was shot inside of the car. He was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m.

Police say the victim was not staying at the Super 8 Motel.

Due to how close the incident was to the main campus of Columbus State University, a Cougar alert went out shortly after 2 a.m. to notify students about the known information at the time. The alert said that no one involved in the shooting was associated with CSU, and the suspects seemed to have left the area.

Columbus police have been conducting interviews, and this case remains under investigation.

Coroner Freeman confirms this is the first homicide of 2014.
