State Democrats promote agenda for middle class

ATLANTA, GA (WALB) -

State Senate Democrats lay out their legislative agenda which they say focuses on working and middle class families.

Priorities unveiled Thursday in Atlanta include doubling the state's minimum wage, expanding Medicaid under Obamacare and increasing education funding.

Since Republicans have overwhelming majorities in both chambers of the General Assembly,  Democrats admit they don't have much power and need to look for common ground with Republicans. Sen. Freddie Powell Sims said, "There's not a lot of power that we have politically, but we do have the power of crossing the aisle and asking others to join us when there are issues that we really want to see done for our folks back home."

Democrats also want to repeal the photo identification provision of a 2006 voter registration law. Most of those proposals aren't likely to get anywhere this year because Republicans won't support them.
