KANNAPOLIS, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Kannapolis are investigating after a 15-month-old girl died after she was reportedly assaulted.

According to the Kannapolis Police Department, officers were called to Carolinas Medical Center-Main, in Charlotte, on Monday about an assault of a 15-month-old female, later identified as Malaya Heun, who lived at an apartment on Running Brook Drive in Kannapolis with her mother and other siblings.

Malaya was initially taken to CMC-Kannapolis by a caregiver and family members Sunday. She was later transported to CMC-Main due the seriousness of her injuries, police told WBTV.

On Wednesday, police say she died from those injuries.

"Due to the sensitive nature of this investigation we are unable to provide any specific information regarding the injuries or potential suspects," Kannapolis Police told WBTV. "Any information released at this point would be detrimental to the successful resolution of this case."

WBTV spoke to neighbors of Heun Thursday, who said they are stunned, upset, and angry about the incident.

Kannapolis Police Chief Woody Chavis told WBTV that the case is the worst of its kind that he has seen in 31 years.

Investigators are completing evidence collection and interviewing additional witnesses. As of Thursday afternoon, no one has been charged.
