Police ID man who died in west Charlotte trash compactor

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Charlotte have identified a man who was found dead in a trash compactor last week.

David Ben Willis, 45, died due to mechanical suffocation, according to the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office.

The incident was reported on Jan. 16 along the 2400 block of Chamberlain Avenue. Officers were called to the scene around 11:08 a.m. Thursday morning.

From WBTV's helicopter, Sky 3, the investigation was centered around a business called Caraustar Fiber.

According to the company's website, Caraustar is one of North America's largest integrated manufacturers of 100% recycled paperboard and converted paperboard products.

Police say Willis was from Shelby.

The investigation is ongoing.
