NC Gov. McCrory talks about year ahead

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -

Gov. Pat McCrory says he wants his second year in office to focus on improving North Carolina's economic climate, supporting public school teachers and making state government more efficient.

McCrory held a news conference Tuesday with his Cabinet and top staff to talk about his goals and other initiatives he says will affect the state for many years.

The governor promised to get a teacher pay package through the General Assembly when it reconvenes in May. but did not provide details.

He wants to increase starting pay and reward teachers in high-demand subjects.

McCrory says passing a Medicaid overhaul plan may be the hardest to get through the legislature.

His administration is also reviewing whether some agencies like the Department of Health and Human Services are too large and unwieldy.
