Politicians stepping into Union Co. proposed redistricting plan

UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Politicians are now stepping into Union County Public school system's proposed redistricting plan. They are writing resolutions against it.

"It was important," Wesley Chapel Mayor Brad Horvath said. "Early on to just set a tone that says, we may want to think about this."

The resolution states about 30 neighborhoods will be affected, also dozens of the people who live in Wesley Chapel. It also states students will be shuffled from high performing schools to lower performing school. The resolution calls that unacceptable.

"It's scary to the parents," the mayor said. "And to the citizens as a whole."

Parents are pleased their politicians are reacting to the proposed plan.

"We've seen resolutions before," UCPS Parent Tracy Kuehler said. "But at least it shows a willingness of leadership to step up and work together for a different solution."

Union County Public School board chairman Richard Yercheck says there will be more discussions before anything is decided. He says he understands the unrest in the community but claims anything decided will put students first.

Kuehler hopes there will be another solution for the sake of her community.

"It's pitting neighborhood against neighborhood," Keuhler said. "We've been able to work together and we've been a community as a whole and now that's being fractured."

Wesley Chapel town council will vote on its resolution Tuesday night. If it passes it will encourage other towns to write a resolution also.
