Police in Salisbury are investigating after pregnant woman was involved in a head-on crash that killed her unborn child.

According to the Salisbury Police Department, officers were called to a crash along the 300 block of South Main Street near the intersection of West Horah St. around noon on Friday.

Officers say a 2011 Chevrolet car and 2002 Ford pickup truck had struck head on.

Witnesses told police that the driver of the Chevrolet, a pregnant woman, was driving left of center for about a block before the crash.

The driver of the Ford truck, a 65-year-old man, reportedly stopped in the road when he saw the vehicle coming towards him. Police say he was not injured in the crash.

Police say the woman was 35 weeks pregnant and was rushed to Novant Rowan Medical Center for treatment. There, the unborn baby died and the driver is currently in critical condition.

Officers say she was not wearing a seatbelt.
