Waxhaw mayor pleads guilty to DWI

The mayor of the Union County town of Waxhaw has pleaded guilty to driving while impaired.

Forty-two-year-old Daune Gardner was arrested by a town police officer last year.

Gardner on Wednesday was placed on a year of unsupervised probation, had her driving privileges curtailed and must perform 24 hours of community service.

Two Waxhaw commissioners said that Gardner should resign. She apologized but refused to step down.

Gardner was arrested June 10. The officer said she saw the mayor cross the center line several times.

Gardner would not talk about the case after her guilty plea.

Her second term expires next year.
