Blue Cross extends payment deadline for new enrollees

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee is extending the deadline for new enrollees in the federal healthcare marketplace to pay their first month's premiums.

The insurance giant has moved the deadline from Jan. 1 to Jan. 31 because of problems people are having with enrollment verification.

Sharon Silva of Murfreesboro, a cancer survivor, has been frustrated trying to verify she successfully signed up for a Blue Cross Gold plan and finding out how to pay her premium.

On Monday, she said she called Blue Cross 20 times before someone was able to answer her question. She'd been trying off and on for two weeks but kept getting a recording.

"It says 'technical difficulties, try again.' So for two weeks, that's what I got," Silva said.

Blue Cross representatives told Channel 4 News that a high call volume is partly to blame. They have shifted staff to help manage the calls.

Silva ran into similar frustrations when trying to verify coverage through the federal marketplace website.

"There's a button that says, 'pay now.' When you hit that button, it doesn't do anything. It loops you back to the beginning, and it's like, OK, what do I do now?"

Blue Cross has some advice to pass along:

Mondays are always high call-volume days, so they recommend you try another day. And the best number for checking your Blue Cross enrollment is 1-800-459-6363.

Remember, it will take two or three days for the marketplace to transfer your enrollment information to an insurance company.

If you haven't received your welcome materials after 10 days, call the marketplace service line to confirm your enrollment. That number is 1-800-318-2596.
