New poll shows Hagan's approval still sliding, Senate race a "tossup"

RALEIGH, NC (WECT) – The 2014 North Carolina Senate race still looms as a tossup, according to the latest numbers released from Public Policy Polling.

The group surveyed nearly 1,400 voters from January 9-12, and found incumbent Kay Hagan's approval numbers continuing to drop. The January result showed 39% of responders saying they approved of the job Hagan is doing, compared to 49% who disapprove. While the disapproval number has remained the same, Hagan's approval has dropped from 44% in November, to 43% in December to 39% in January.

According to the poll, the Affordable Care Act may be responsible for much of Hagan's drop.  Only 38% of responders in January supported it, compared to 48% opposed.  Independents are more against the "Obamacare" program than others at 31% support & 57% oppose. The ACA did gain slightly when it comes to implementation, with 61% of subjects now considering it unsuccessful and 32% who call it a success. That is compared to December's 65/30 results.

In the Republican race to oppose Hagan in November, House Speaker Thom Tillis gained some ground in the January poll.  Tillis now leads the GOP list of candidates responders would like to see run against Hagan. His 19% response compared to 11% for both Greg Brannon and Heather Grant, 8% for Mark Harris, and 7% for Bill Flynn. Tillis is up 6 points from his 13% result in December, while Harris showed the biggest drop from 12% down to 8%.

According to a PPP release, "Tillis' increased support this primary would still be headed to a runoff if the election was today. If the undecided voters broke proportionately to their current candidate preferences it would only be enough to get Tillis to 34%, well short of the 40% needed in North Carolina to win the primary outright."

"The North Carolina Senate race continues to look like a tossup," Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling said in the release accompanying the new poll results. "It would help Kay Hagan if the electorate shifted its attention to something other than Obamacare."
