LAUDERDALE COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A man, who is considered armed and dangerous, is still evading police after he reportedly stole a Lauderdale County deputy's patrol SUV Saturday morning.

The SUV was located, but the suspect, 58-year-old Stephen Melton, is still on the run.

Deputies are searching the woods behind Henning and Fort Pillow in Lauderdale County.

Melton has a criminal history in Tipton County for driving with a suspended license, as well as criminal impersonation. He also has various traffic violations in Shelby County.

According to Lauderdale County Sheriff Steve Sanders, Melton is "anti-government and anti-police."

Sanders says he is focusing his search in the southern part of the county, between Henning and the Mississippi River.

He says people along Highway 87 should be cautious because Melton is extremely dangerous. He feels like Melton is hiding out in the woods somewhere in rural Lauderdale County.

"Yeah, there's a lot of people talking about it. They'll find him eventually," says Lauderdale County resident Jessica Davis.

On Saturday, Melton was arrested at his home by deputies.

As they searched his house, Melton was outside in the deputy's SUV. He kicked an 11-inch hole through Plexiglas, climbed in front and stole it.

Later that day, the SUV was found.

"Yeah, we see this kind of thing all the time, being up the road from the prison, but you can't barricade yourself in the house forever, if so, you'll stay there forever," said Davis.

Residents along Highway 87 say they are staying safe and keeping their guns close to their sides.

"I'm a country girl, and that's something we're raised up doing ... We protect us and our families," said Davis.

If you see Stephen Melton or know where he might be, call your local law enforcement immediately.
