Lane reopens after boulder falls onto I-24 E

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A boulder fell on eastbound Interstate 24 in the middle of rush hour, tying up traffic Tuesday morning.

It happened near mile marker 42 just west of Briley Parkway.

The boulder rolled into a lane, and officials had to block it off, causing traffic to back up for miles.

"Thankfully, the best part of this was that no one was injured. There were no vehicles coming by when this happened, so thankfully everyone is safe," said Deanna Lambert, spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Crews were able to move the boulder off the roadway around 10 a.m. and reopened the lane about an hour and a half after it fell.

TDOT crews say something like this isn't that uncommon this time of year.

"Our geo-technical teams do believe that the freezing and thawing of the ice that might be sitting up there in some of these boulders might have caused them to shift," Lambert said.

The boulder, which is about 6 feet tall and 12 feet wide, left a large gash in the roadway.

Officials say the boulder will remain on the side of the interstate because they do not anticipate it causing any further problems.
