WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Former NC House member Daniel McComas says he will not run for the state Senate seat being vacated later this year by fellow Republican Thom Goolsby.

"I have some health issues I need to take care of," McComas said in a telephone conversation Monday night.

McComas, who represented New Hanover County in the District 19 House seat for nine terms, was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in September and has been in rehab ever since. McComas did not run for re-election in 2012, stepping down near the end of his term to take an appointment as Chairman of the NC State Ports Authority Board.

McComas did address who he would endorse in the race to succeed Goolsby, who said last week he was not going to run for another term.

"I was not aware that Michael Lee is interested in running," McComas said. "But if he does, I will endorse him."

Lee, an attorney from Wilmington, said last week he is "seriously considering" running for the District 9 seat. Lee is currently serving on the NC Board of Transportation. He ran unsuccessfully for the seat in 2008.
