Officials in Rock Hill say a 98-year-old man was killed in a house fire last week after he attempted to dismantle a propane tank to get scrap metal.

According to Battalion Chief Rusty Myers with the Rock Hill Fire Department, investigators say the fire erupted just before noon at a home on Hoyle Street in Rock Hill last Thursday.

Neighbors said they heard an explosion just before the house went up in flames.

Ninety-eight-year-old Fred Cathcart died at the home.  A second person, Alice Crockett, was airlifted to a burn center in Winston Salem, sources told WBTV.

Investigators say Cathcart was "attempting to dismantle a 25 pound propane cylinder inside the residence for scrap metal. The cylinder was thought to be empty at the time, however when the cylinder head was dismantled it resulted in a large pressure release causing an explosion and fire."

Rock Hill firefighters said by the time they arrived at the home, it was fully engulfed in flames.
