CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Saturday is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

Victims of human trafficking are mainly children, ages 12 to 14 years old.

Many people believe human trafficking happens outside of the United States. But, Saturday's awareness day stressed human trafficking happens right here in our backyard.

Charlotte Police Chief Rodney Monroe says his department is getting better at understanding and dealing with the issue.

It is estimated that there are at least 20 million victims of human trafficking across the world today. There are around 150,000 victims in the United States alone.
