Norfolk Southern says its new rail yard at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport will be able to handle 200,000 cargo containers a year.
The Charlotte Observer reported the railroad company showed its new 200-acrea facility to reporters Wednesday.
The new $92 million facility replaces Norfolk Southern's current rail yard just north of the uptown area. It received nearly $16 million in state and local grants and is eligible for future tax credits.
The yard can move containers from trucks to trains and vice versa. It has room for more than 1,300 trucks.
Norfolk Southern will pay the airport $1 million a year for the location.
City officials hope the rail yard will attract more business to the area.
