CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials have announced that the district would be on a two-hour delay for Wednesday morning.

"Weather reports indicate that temperatures will be extremely low again tomorrow," officials said. "Because of this severe weather, we will operate on a two-hour delay on Wednesday, Jan. 8."

"Such extreme cold weather affects some of our school buses and buildings, particularly the older ones," the district continued. "Opening schools on the delayed schedule today allowed transportation and maintenance staff time to prepare buses and facilities before the school day started."

The two-hour delay also means that:
• Before- and after-school enrichment programs (ASEP) will begin at the normal time
• Buses will run routes two hours later than the normal time
• All after-school and athletic activities will operate on the normal schedule
• Schools will dismiss at the normal time

"We have made this decision because we place the safety of students and staff before any other concern," school officials said. "Please be safe and dress warmly."
