Rebound on Charlotte’s Westside

Posted: Updated:

New business development points to the fact that the intersection of Morehead Street and Freedom drive is clearly at the crossroads of positive change.

Pinky's Westside Grill is the brain child of Greg Auten, and these days folks at restaurant are just beaming over more traffic coming to this side of town.

Auten said, "My heart has always been on the Westside, and when I had the opportunity to come over here and do something. It took us two years to do it."

Across the street, Dunkin Donuts set up shop in what to be an old NCNB branch.

More than 20 years ago, former Mecklenburg Superior Court judge Shirley Fulton became an advocate for housing in this neighborhood.

Her philosophy improves living conditions and businesses will follow, but there is a new goal.

"That sustainable facilities will come into being like a drug store. Like a grocery store," Fulton said.

In recent years, the turnaround has been celebrated by an event billed as the Freemore festival.

Bike store owner Chris Sheehan is glad to be part of the turnaround.

"Five plus years, we're up and running and every year, "he said. "We're better than before."

Not far from the intersection a new charter school is going up and so is more housing.

Back at Pinky's, Greg Auten is thankful for the new found success.

"I'm really proud of what we've done here, and I hope that we've inspired other people to try and do the same, because the west side deserves it," he said.
