Some 911 cellphone calls lack accurate information

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -

A coalition pushing a federal agency to update wireless technology for emergency callers is pointing to problems in North Carolina to raise awareness of the issue.

The Find Me 911 Coalition says nearly half of all calls received by 911 emergency centers in North Carolina from wireless phones in June 2013 failed to include accurate information on the caller's location.

Coalition director Jamie Barnett says his group analyzed information submitted by the state to the Federal Communications Commission.

With a landline, dispatchers can provide first responders with an exact location.

But it gets complicated when someone calls 911 from a cellphone - especially if the emergency call is made from an indoor location, such as a home or an apartment.

The FCC says it has been looking into the problem.
