Flu widespread in N.C., experts warn 2014 will be a bad year

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Have you gotten your flu shot? Experts say there's still time to get one and predict 2014 will be one of the worst years for the flu season.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), widespread outbreaks have been reported in ten states, including North Carolina.

There were 13 reported deaths from the flu in N.C. in 2013, most of those reported just last week.

That's why Doodle Smith, of Charlotte, doesn't take any chances when it comes to getting her flu shot.

"It can take me out," she said. "Every year, I get a flu shot."

She says everyone should get one -- but especially folks like herself.

"Older people particularly can be affected by the flu -- it can be serious," said Smith.

Doctors say they're seeing a spike in patients with the flu and that it's not too late to get your vaccine.

"The H1N1 is what we think is the pre-dominant strain of the flu "A" right now and there is H1N1 in every vaccine that's available this year," said Dr. Barbara Pierce.

The flu season is expected to peak in February but last through early March.
