A Boone man spent New Year's in jail after police say he assaulted someone at a grocery store then led police on a high speed chase.
The incident was reported as an assault on Dec. 31 at the Ingle's grocery store on Highway 105, according to the news release from the Boone Police Department.
Dustin Ryan Guy, 26, of Boone, is charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, resisting public officers and assault and battery.
Police say Guy was seen leaving Ingle's in a dark Chevrolet SUV.
They pulled him over a short time later on King Street but when officers got out of their patrol cars Guy sped off in the SUV heading down Water Street.
Boone Police with the assistance of Watauga County Sheriff's Deputies briefly attempted to pursue the vehicle but discontinued the chase due to safety considerations since the identity of the fleeing man was known, according to the release.
Officers soon located the vehicle abandoned on Queen Street not far from where the pursuit had begun.
A canine unit was requested and the vehicle's operator was soon discovered in a wooded area nearby.
Guy was taken before a Watauga County magistrate where he was placed under a $25,000 secured bond.
