TAYLORSVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

An investigation is underway after an elderly couple was found dead inside an Alexander County home on Tuesday.

According to the Alexander County Sheriff's Office, the bodies of 77-year-old Robert Quackenbush and 71-year-old Betty Jean Quackenbush were found decomposing inside a home along the 500 block of County Home Road in Taylorsville.

Deputies say concerned acquaintances requested officers check on them after the couple had not been seen or heard from in nearly two weeks.

According to reports, neighbors heard some shots last week. When deputies arrived, they had to break into the home to get inside.

That's when they found one body in the garage and a second body inside the home. Deputies called the medical examiner and requested a warrant to search the rest of the home.

Officers have not determined the cause of death and are treating this case as an active death investigation; foul play has not been ruled out at this time.

Investigators say autopsies have been ordered to determine how the couple died.

Deputies say two dogs and a cat were found inside of the home, while a second cat was dead.

Anyone with information or who has spoken to or seen the couple in the past few weeks is asked to call the Alexander County Sheriff's
