CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

More than 200 volunteers answered the call on Christmas Day to help serve those in need at the Charlotte Rescue Mission. Their goal is to give the homeless and needy an afternoon of food, fun and family during the Holidays.

"I want folks to walk out of here and say, 'Wow, I walked in here thinking my best days were behind me... but through God's grace my best days are in front of me," said Rev. Tony Marciano, Executive Director of the Rescue Mission.

Volunteer cooks prepared 100 turkeys and 50 hams for the lunch time meal.

"Today's the celebration of Christmas," said Marciano. "We're just trying to make it an incredibly special day for our most fragile citizens in our community."

Marciano isn't the only one excited about the 9-hour celebration. E.J. Underwood has volunteered her time for the last 20 years to give back.

"So many of our folks don't have the means to prepare a Christmas dinner," said Underwood. "It's just a wonderful time for them."

Underwood says people are also able to which movies to stay out of the cold and use cell phones provided for them to make calls to loved ones.

The group plans on serving an excess of 1,000 meals by the time Christmas Day is over.
