A Greenville teen shot and paralyzed in Columbia in October is back home, according to her uncle.
Martha Childress, 18, plans to spend a quiet Christmas at home with her family after months in a rehabilitation clinic in Atlanta, where she learned how to adjust to life in her wheelchair. Childress was shot in October by a stray bullet in the Five Points area while waiting for a taxi.
Her uncle Jim Carpenter said he is amazed by her positive attitude in the face of such adversity. He said Martha is not letting her tragedy determine her destiny.
"She's not going to let this incident control her life," Carpenter said. "She's gonna take some online courses, hopefully take some college courses here at local institutions. And then next fall, she and some friends already have a deposit on an apartment down there."
Childress visited her alma mater, J.L. Mann High School Thursday. She spent time with the yearbook staff she worked with last year.
The suspect in the case, Michael Juan Smith, is still behind bars, and charges against him have been upgraded to attempted murder.
