LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - They say it's the most wonderful time of the year, but it's also the busiest time of the year for some employees in Louisville.

Thursday marks the busiest shipping day of the year for UPS and inside the UPS Worldport Santa's helpers were working hard to get all those holiday gifts on the road.

"We know leading up to the peak, that schedules are going to get very busy, there's going to be a lot of extra flights, it's our Super Bowl time, it's our time to shine," said Assistant Chief Pilot Jeff White Whiteman.

Over the next two days, UPS will process more than 4 million packages. Due to that volume, an additional 1,300 seasonal employees were hired.

UPS Spokesperson Jeff Wafford said, "The seasonal employees range quite a bit in lifestyle, everything from people home from college to people who have other jobs and just want to earn some extra Christmas cash."

Stimulating the local economy, while keeping the competitive edge.

"Everybody's ready and we know we're on showcase for the holiday season," he said.

That's what's motivating them to deliver worldwide.

"Half of our flights domestically, half internationally, we'll take off out of Louisville and go direct to Honolulu or direct to Cologne, Germany and fly around the world or it might be a turn out to Minneapolis and back. Pretty much have everything under the sun," said Whitman.

Even if it means flying through the night to make sure your packages get to their destinations in time.
